Individual Care. Individual Recovery

Substance use disorders impact more than just the person struggling: they affect families, relationships, mental health, and every area of life. At Hope’s Destiny, we understand that addiction is not a moral failing but a treatable condition that often develops alongside underlying mental health challenges.

Whether you’re seeking help for yourself or someone you care about, we’re here to guide you with compassion, expertise, and hope.

What Is a Substance Use Disorder?

A substance use disorder is a complex medical condition that affects both brain function and behavior. This condition leads to an inability to control substance use, even when facing harmful consequences. People develop SUDs when regular use of alcohol, prescription medications, or other substances begins to interfere with their daily functioning – from maintaining employment to managing household responsibilities to sustaining meaningful relationships.

SUDs exist on a spectrum—from mild to severe—and can affect people of any age, background, or life experience. Medical research shows that approximately 50% of individuals with SUDs also experience co-occurring mental health conditions, such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, or bipolar disorder.

The relationship between substance use and mental health is deeply interconnected. Many individuals turn to substances as a way to manage underlying mental health symptoms. However, this use often backfires, as sustained substance use can trigger new mental health challenges or intensify existing ones. This is why successful treatment must address both conditions together.

Like other chronic medical conditions such as diabetes or heart disease, SUDs have clear biological and environmental risk factors. They respond to proven medical treatments and require comprehensive, ongoing care. This understanding helps shift the perspective from viewing SUDs as personal failures to seeing them as treatable medical conditions.

Signs and Symptoms

Recognizing a substance use disorder isn’t always straightforward – particularly when mental health symptoms are also present. But knowing what to look for can make all the difference in getting timely help. Watch for these warning signs across four key areas of life:

  • Physical Health & Wellness – Substance use disorders often manifest through distinct physical changes. Individuals may experience significant weight fluctuations, chronic fatigue, and declining personal hygiene. Common physical indicators include bloodshot eyes, changes in pupil size, and unexplained injuries or marks. Sleep patterns typically become disrupted, ranging from excessive sleeping to persistent insomnia. When substance use stops, withdrawal symptoms such as tremors, profuse sweating, and severe nausea may emerge.
  • Behavioral & Mental – Mental health changes are deeply intertwined with substance use. People often experience dramatic mood swings, heightened irritability, and increasing anxiety or paranoia. Basic cognitive functions suffer – concentration becomes difficult, and memory problems emerge. Many individuals develop depression, expressing hopelessness about their future. Their decision-making becomes impaired, leading to choices that contradict their usual character and values.
  • Social & Relational – Relationships inevitably strain as substance use intensifies. Individuals often withdraw from family and long-time friends, frequently missing milestone events and declining social invitations. A concerning pattern emerges as they begin gravitating toward new social circles that enable or share their substance use while meaningful long-term relationships deteriorate. Arguments with loved ones become more frequent and intense, typically revolving around substance use and its rippling effects. Professional and academic relationships suffer, too, as reliability wavers and communication breaks down.
  • Daily Functioning & Responsibilities – The impact on daily life becomes increasingly evident as the disorder progresses. What starts as occasional missed deadlines can escalate to frequent workplace absences and declining performance reviews. Financial stability erodes through both direct costs (spending on substances) and indirect losses (reduced work hours, missed opportunities). Even fundamental tasks become overwhelming – bills go unpaid, home maintenance falters, and parental responsibilities may be neglected. As the condition advances, more time and mental energy shift toward obtaining and using substances, creating a cycle where basic life management becomes increasingly difficult.

It’s important to note that these symptoms can vary greatly from person to person, and you don’t need to experience all of them to have a substance use disorder. Many of these symptoms overlap with mental health conditions, which is why professional assessment is crucial for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.
